ESL Assessment

The ability of immigrant and refugee families to communicate within their community and workplace can be a major impediment to self sufficiency and wellbeing.

On November 14, at a community forum, Central Christian Church released an assessment of English-as-a-Second-Language services and client populations in Lexington, KY. The assessment, conducted by Dr. Aminata Cairo, includes a geographic assessment of where ESL services are located and also maps major non-English speaking populations by language. The forum, which was coordinated by LexLinc, included time to evaluate community services as a system and prioritize how we can provide a stronger continuum of services to help families achieve self sufficiency through language learning.

The assessment was made possible thanks to a grant from the Virginia Clark Hagan Charitable Foundation. Central Christian Church assembled a community advisory team to guide the research process, chaired by Wanda Bertram, Executive Director of LexLinc, and Isabel Taylor, Multicultural Affairs Coordinator for the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government. Many thanks to the numerous community organizations that participated in the assessment.
