WHAT WE DO

Ultimate Home Visit

Intensive immersed learning in Mexican culture and systems.
With a growing number of Mexican families in Fayette County and Central Kentucky, many organizations are not equipped to serve these families. The goal of this project is to develop more effective direct services to meet growing Latino needs in the Lexington region - in public education, health care and social services. This immersion project takes place in and around Morelia, Mexico, a city of one million people in central Mexico known for its wonderful colonial architecture and the University of Michoacan. Morelia is surrounded by small towns and rural villages whose people are typical of those migrating to the U.S.

The original “Home Visit” idea is the creation of Cathy Sutphen, Family Resource Center Coordinator at Russell Cave Elementary. With a goal of enhancing the community services for diverse cultures, LexLinc embraced and organized this project, which piloted in June 2003.

Participation: The project requires a delegation of no less than ten but no more than twenty individuals representing services most relevant to Latinos in Lexington. Participants consist of policy makers, managers and direct practitioners from public school, educational and governmental institutions, as well as human service, faith-based and neighborhood organizations.

Itinerary:
Participants live with host families in Morelia. The program itinerary includes both classroom and experiential learning, including interaction with schools, health and human service systems across community systems. (Click here for more information about the 2008 trip.)

Project Administration: now a partnership between the University of Kentucky and La Universidad Latina de America in Morelia, LexLinc continues to serve as a fiscal agent.
